Semi-Final Round #4: March 19, 20, 21 @ Mira Costa HS, Manhattan Beach, CA

1st Place Game – Newport WPF 10, New York Athletic Club 8

(from USAWP Website Premier League  Page)

Newport outlasted New York, 10-8 in the first place game of the tournament. Newport earns seven points toward the American Water Polo League Championships standings, while New York earns six.

Layne Beaubien took all of 31 seconds to get New York on the board in the first quarter. Ryan Bailey’s score out of two-meters at the 5:07 mark tied the game at 1-1, but Wolf Wigo untied things in a hurry on a penalty throw past Genai Kerr not long after. Newport’s Jeff Powers lofted in a long lob goal past New York keeper Merrill Moses and Bailey picked up his second goal of the game on a backhand from the hole at 1:52 to give Newport a 3-2 lead to take into the second quarter.

With 5:39 on the clock in the second, former Olympian Alex Rousseau pulled up and drilled a counterattack goal past Genai Kerr to tie the game at 3-3, but Ofer Horn’s skip goal on the next possession tipped the score back in favor of Newport. Drac Wigo’s long cross on a counterattack at 2:37 found a wide open Adam Wright for an easy score to tie the score at 4-4. Newport’s Shea Buckner buried a long goal at 1:30 to take the score to 5-4. NYAC goalie Merrill Moses stomped out an opportunity for Newport to extend the lead when he batted down what looked to be a sure goal for Dan Klatt on a counterattack with 55 seconds left. But Newport found its way back into Moses’ neighborhood and cashed in later in the quarter, getting a perimeter goal from Bailey, his third of the game.

Beaubien’s counterattack goal early in the third quarter cut the Newport lead to a single goal at 6-5. Jon Dorfi’s goal into the high right corner at 2:55 bumped the Newport advantage back to two goals, but Beaubien’s third goal of the game at 2:29 made it a 7-6 game. Wolf Wigo converted on a shot from four meters out just seconds later to knot the scoreboard at 7-7, but Newport answered again, this time on a bar-in goal by Jeff Powers at 1:17, sending the score to 8-7 heading into the final frame.

Adam Wright’s bar-down score for New York at 5:50 of the third produced yet another tie. Newport went ahead by a goal at 5:04 on an extra-man score from five meters out on the left side. An exclusion on Powers at 3:44 sent New York to work on the player-advantage, but Sergei Bushuev’s backhand tap went high over the cage, squandering a big opportunity for the Big Apple crew. Bushuev came down on defense only to be kicked out himself, giving Newport a shot to add to its lead, but Bushuev stole the ball away when he reentered 20 seconds later. Newport, up 9-8, was called for a shot clock violation with 29 seconds left, prompting New York to use its final timeout. After the break, Wigo found Wright sliding out on the left post but Wright’s lob past Kerr floated off of the far post and Newport used its final timeout. Drac Wigo entered the field of play with 10 seconds left as New York’s eighth player in an effort to draw a penalty. The officials obliged, but Moses wasn’t able to stop Bailey’s ensuing penalty throw and Newport went up 10-8.
