I wanted a boost and an EGT guage on my A4 Golf to keep an eye on things.   Here's the guage I got from Westach. As you can see, it is a 3" combination boost and EGT guage.    The intake manifold was off for cleaning so I went ahead and removed the exhaust manifold so I could tap them both for the fittings required.

Here's all the pieces I ordered which include the guage, a mounting pod which I removed the mounting ball from, a lighting kit, and the EGT thermocouple. Also included were the boost hose and fittings and a thermocouple wire extension. It all cost around $150 to my door from Westach.

Here's the intake manifold being tapped 1/8 inch pipe for the barb fitting. I chose a location out of the way of turbulence inside and with unobstructed access outside. Thats a shop vac hose sucking chips out as they fall.

Location choices on the exhaust manifold were limited by the shape of the manifold, what with the turbo so close to where the manifold branches off to the cylinders, and having access to the thermocouple with all the pieces mounted on the car. I ordered 1/8 inch pipe here also. The same shop vac chip catcher is used here too. A scrap plastic hood is taped over the turbo outlet to deflect flying chips while allowing the air to enter the same opening.

Here's a shot of the plugs I installed in the taps because I hadn't recieved the guage stuff yet and wanted to drive the car in the meantime.

I wanted to mount the guage in a way that didn't modify the car visibly. I concidered and discarded the idea of mounting the guage to a carpet type dash cover because I thought it might be prone to vibrate. I settled on a small 1/8 X 3/4 steel bracket cut with a hacksaw and bent in a vise with a hammer. It nests into the side defroster well and is secured with two self tapping screws into the plastic duct. A spot of silicone sealer fills the inevitable gap between the steel and plastic. The plastic grill was trimed to clear the bracket and installed by slipping it over the bracket before the guage pod was attached to the bracket.

The boost hose and EGT wires were routed through the firewall via the grommet above the brake vacuum pot, and up from under the dash to the guage through a passage just ahead of the dashboard side cover that locates the fuse access door.

Here's the bracket, the self tapping mounting screws, and the 1/4 in. drive ratchet used to get the screws in.
