I took out all the intake tubes and intercooler to thouroughly clean them at the 40k timing belt change. I found that contrary to Bentley, the right headlight does not need to be removed to get the intercooler out. Just rotate the bottom to the rear of the car as the top rotates forward and down. I had to spread the bumper slightly to have enough room, and the front of the inner fender panel needed to be loosened and swung to the rear.

      Here's a look at the lower intake tube from my 99 A4 Golf. It's said to be an oil collector, however, since I don't find anything special in the way of shape to deal with the collecting and draining of a liquid, I am more inclined to regard it as an intake silencer.
