"Every child is an artist.
The problem is
how to remain an artist
once he grows up."
Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973)
8 January 2005, Sarah Rose inspired me once again.
On a trip to Costco,
Sarah saw a Pete
card I was going to give my students and said,
"why not have him hold a peace symbol?"...from the mouths of
babes.
Stay tuned to see how Sarah Rose leaves her imprint on Pete, the Hatterbys, me, and the world.
Thank you, Sarah Rose.
Collaboration with Sarah Rose
inspired by a piece shown on "Sunday Morning" about African-American
women and their hats.
give peace a chance...
On a road trip to the bay area, we heard the Tipping Point, by Malcolm Gladwell, on tape.
In an attempt to create our golden parachute, we starting looking at what we could do in our next lives. The Hatterbys came to mind. Sarah Rose took copious notes.
We were influenced by the amount of lip service given to the environment and the overwhelming lack of environmentally friendly products. We came up with the idea of creating bags to carry groceries, books, and other objects of our lives. We thought about not just buying cotton bags from India, which we saw at the UCLA book store touting "green" products, but rather make them in our own neighborhood out of recycled fabric.
The two Hatterbys above represent our first attempts at imagery to be silk screened, with a soy based ink, onto a patch that then gets stitched onto the bag.
We will keep you posted on how our project develops.

These were the original Hatterbys.
As you can see throughout this page, they have continued to add new hats to their wardrobe.
