Statutes


Hereby let it be known that the Company of St. Martin de Tours is founded as a war unit and Tournament Company.

In goodwill and good purpose, we hereby form this Company of St. Martin de Tours, and to this end, we proclaim the statutes of the Company of St. Martin de Tours, hereafter referred to as the "Company":

1. The Company shall be a confraternity of Peers, Knights, Squires and Men-at-Arms and their supporters that join together under one banner as a unit/war band at SCA and Adrian wars.

2. The Company shall be a Tournament Company that will host/sponsor period style tournaments in both SCA and Adrian groups.

3. We of the Company shall strive to follow the Chivalric Virtues - Prowess, Largesse, Loyalty, Honesty, Courtesy, Franchise, Faith, and Courage.

4. The Company is both an independent entity, as well as an unofficial subgroup of both the SCA and the Adrian Empire.

5. We of the Company shall strive to seek out martial deeds of great prowess, valiant acts, great service, grand presentation, and seek to acquire great renown and knightly fame individually and for the Company as a whole.

6. We of the Company shall strive to maintain the raiment, harness, equipage, and bearing of noble Gentlemen and Gentlewomen (including those which would have had a significant presence in Europe between the time of Charlemagne and the end of the 16th century.)

7. We of the Company shall strive to create a period encampment area with accompanying heraldic display (based on each individual's persona). This encampment area may include camps from all Chivalric eras, from roughly the time of Charlemagne to the end of the 16th century. Culture specific camps may be stationed together to encourage a more cohesive look. Non-period camps are welcome, but will be grouped together and not intermixed with the period encampment.

8. We of the Company shall be encouraged to increase our authenticity and involvement in all types of period activities - equestrian, archery, arts, and sciences, as well as combat, and may field representative units for any given activity.

9. We of the Company shall encourage fun period pastimes, such as crafts, music, games, sports, and other social activities.

10. We of the Company shall be admonished to show largesse in ways that increase the material culture of medieval recreation, especially in such ways that help those new to medieval recreation.

11. The Company shall be family-oriented and welcome non-combatants and children. We recognize that some allowances must be made for children in regards to authentic appearance and accouter.


12. The Premiers of the Company of St. Martin de Tours shall be responsible for the organization, welfare and running of the Company. The Noble Sponsors of the Company are Sir Arion Hirsch von Schutzhundheim and Dame Juliana Hirsch von Schutzhundheim, hereby termed Premiers.

13. The Company shall make field command experience available to all interested members who have completed training. Training shall consist of marching and command experience at two war practices, and subcommand experience at two wars. The Premiers, as Captain (Hauptman) and Lieutenant (Leutnant), shall appoint a field commander and sub-commander on a per war basis, reserving the right to command occasionally as well as represent the unit at major war councils.

14. The Premiers shall grant entrance into the Company after consulting with the membership.

15. The Premiers may remove members from the Company after consulting with the membership.

16. The Premiers shall poll the membership before making significant changes to this policy.

17. The Company shall determine a list of "friends of the Company" who are generally accepted to fight and camp with us, but who may choose not to become official members.

18. The Company shall require a member to sponsor a potential new member.

19. The Company shall encourage potential members to camp and fight with us before official membership.

20. The Company shall eschew pay for military service, fighting for King and country, and for causes that are right and just.

21. The company shall encourage those wishing to fight by our side to do so for honor and glory and good fellowship. Hiring of mercenaries shall be upon the approval by the Premiers after consulting the membership of the company.

22. The Premiers shall appoint a Quartermaster to reserve and organize the camp for each war.

23. We of the Company shall abide by the rules of the camp set for each event. Basic rules that apply to the Company of St. Martin's camp shall include:
a. Cover or remove non-period items from the period encampment area.
b. Smoking in the period encampment area shall be limited to period pipes, and done where it does not disturb other members.
c. No illegal substances are allowed in camp.
d. Hostile, violent, or divisive behavior may be cause for immediate expulsion from the camp, and potentially, the Company (i.e. no temper tantrums or nasty politics).
e. Conflicts will be handled politely and with civility. Likewise, polite requests shall be treated as serious concerns.
f. Pick up after yourself and those you are responsible for.
g. Members are responsible for their guests and their guests accouter as dictated in the previous items.

24. The Company shall encourage members to sponsor theme events such as feasts and social evenings. Theme events based on a specific time and place can require attire appropriate to the theme.

25. Members of the Company may also belong to other households, political groups or war bands. Members may also elect to be active in select aspects of the Company, be they SCA Tournaments, Adrian Tournaments, Adrian Wars, SCA Wars, Equestrian activities, or other re-enactment activities.

26. Members of the Company holding ranks or titles in different organizations shall be recognized based on the custom and their ranks held in organization sponsoring the event. For events sponsored solely by the Company of St. Martin de Tours, official ranks and titles awarded in either the SCA or the Adrian Empire shall be recognized.

27. Members of the Company are granted the right to display the badge of the Company of Saint Martin on their person, equipment and banners as appropriate.

In our noble Company, we shall strive to do honor to the noble men and women who have come before us; to eschew the base vices of malice, anger, vainglory, tyranny, poverty, and loss of estate; to display kindness and fond friendship; and to ever practice, promote and exalt the skillful and strong employment of noble arms. We hereby proclaim that we shall strive to advance the noble banner of Chivalry and Honor.

We the signatories and founders of the Company of Saint Martin de Tours have affixed our hands, seals, or other marks affirming our intent this 28 day of March, 2003.
