Comparison of September 1998 edition of Trails of The Angeles to the January 1990 edition

Because most ANF hikers probably have the 1990 edition of the Trails of The Angeles, and because this site retains the numbering scheme used in that edition, it is of interest to know what changes Robinson has made in the 1998 edition.

Seven trips have been deleted, and six new trips have been added. Four hikes were deleted because the West Fork dirt road from Red Box is closed to vehicular traffic now, eliminating the trips as described previously. These four hikes were replaced with three nearby hikes, with one hike using an entirely new location added. One hike was deleted in order to reduce the 101 hikes (1-100 including 54a and 54b) to 100 hikes. Two hikes were replaced with other hikes in the same general location.

Six trips changed hike numbers.

In addition, three trips had significant modifications, changing a portion of the hike.

Because two hikes fell in multiple categories, 14 hike numbers of 1990 (13, 48-52, 54a, 54b, 55-57, 76, 89 and 93) now denote different hikes. I will shortly add a table giving my assigned hike numbers to the changed 1998 hike numbers. This mess is why the International Astronomical Union specifies that astronomical source names are never changed, once assigned!

The changes are given separately in the following categories:

Added Trips
Deleted Trips
Major Trip Modifications
Minor Trip Modifications
Changed Trip Descriptions
Changed Trip Numbers
Minor Changes to Trip Names, Typo Corrections

Some of these changes, especially the typos, have probably been made in later printings of the 1990 edition. Just for fun, I've collected some of these changes in an incomplete table of Changes During Printings Of The 1990 Editions.

Deleted Trips

1990 Trip NumberTrip NameComments
49West Fork via Valley Forge Trail to Eaton Saddle, Mt. Wilson RoadThe West Fork dirt road from Red Box is now closed indefinitely to public vehicular travel, necessitating the deletion of hikes 49-52.
50West Fork to Mt. Wilson via Rattlesnake Trail
51West Fork Campground to Devore Trail Camp, West Fork of the San Gabriel River
52West Fork Campground to Angeles Crest Highway
58Mt. Hillyer from Santa Clara Divide RoadDeleted as a result of cleaning up the numbering system, and retaining only 100 hikes, after hike 54b became hike 55.
89Lightning Ridge Nature Trail
93Blue Ridge to Pine and Dawson Mtns. and Mount San AntonioThe altitude gain for this hike has been incorrectly given in the last several editions. The correct altitude gain is 4,600', not 3,000'.

7676Crystal Lake to Little Jimmy Spring, Mt. IslipsameUses new Big Cienaga cutoff to cut 2 miles off trip.

Minor Trip Modifications

Trip NumberTrip NameChanges
1990199819901998
44Bouquet Canyon to Big Oak Spring, Sierra PelonasameChanged trailhead from old overgrown Big Tree Trail to new PCT intersection with Bouquet Canyon Road. Neither Roy Randall nor Russell Bell could find the Big Tree Trailhead at Bouquet Canyon Road in 1998 and 1999, nor the intersection of the Big Tree Trail and the PCT along the fire road. The high end of the Big Tree Trail still exists at the crest.
The option at the crest of the Sierra Pelona is now to go 3 miles east to Mt. McDill, instead of 3 miles west to the no-longer-standing Sierra Pelona Lookout.
Thanks to Russell Bell for pointing out the changes.

Changes During Printings Of The 1990 Editions

This table is probably incomplete since I own only the first printing of the 1990 edition. Because input for this table comes from readers who have a specific printing, instead of an exhaustive comparison of all printings, it is likely that some of the changes occurred in earlier printings.

The printings:

1January 1990
2
3September 1993
4
5
6June 1996

The changes:
