Maps and Aerial Photos of the Fallbrook Area

Microsoft has a great site, the Terraserver, that gives satellite and USGS aerial photography of most of the country. For Fallbrook, the only coverage is aerial photography taken on 1 June 1994. But that's better than for a lot of the L.A. Basin, which has no coverage at all.
Here are some entry points to specific locations. Zoom out to cover a bigger area with less resolution. Zoom in on the large-scale images by clicking on a point of interest (which doesn't always work exactly right.) You can also make the picture smaller and cover less area if you don't like scrolling your screen. The size given below will just fill a 17" monitor at 1024 x 768 resolution, if you scroll the window to center the image, except for the images of my house.
If you want to scroll to other areas of Fallbrook, use the green arrows at the borders of the large-scale images. From the small-scale images, it is best to zoom out first, and then zoom back in once you have found the area you desire.
Large-Scale Images (8.9 miles wide by 5.9 miles high)
- Bonsall center, showing San Luis Rey Downs Racetrack just below center, the San Luis Rey River flowing from the upper right corner, Olive Hill Road going to the west and then north from just lower left of center, and Camino Del Rey taking off from just below center to the lower right.
- De Luz, showing a hard-to-see Ross Lake 1/7 of the way down from the top at center (look for a smooth featureless carrot shape with the root end pointing to the upper right), with Daily Road following the drainage to the west-southwest. De Luz Road meanders east-west along the bottom of the image, turning north 1/6 of the way right from the bottom on the left edge to follow the De Luz Creek upstream. The wide firebreaks of Camp Pendleton are obvious at the bottom, as is a faint feature defining the triangular upper portion of the base just below the water tank that is just below the picture center. At the very top left, the De Luz School (not visible to me) is just to the right of where the East Fork of the De Luz Creek goes northeast out of the picture. Via Cordoniz Conquistador Road is the prominent-looking road from the middle right edge, heading towards the lower left corner, but stopping at Supale Ranch Road in the middle.
See also the descriptions for maps for Santa Margarita Mountains below, immediately northwest of De Luz.
- Downtown Fallbrook, from S. Mission and Main north, including De Luz Road, Santa Margarita River, and Fallbrook Naval Weapons Station.
- I-15 and Mission Rd. is just above the center of the image. The Red Mountain Reservoir is the largest body of water above and to the left. Reche Road takes off west at the center, 1/3 of the way from the bottom, with the Valley Oaks Trailer Park visible as the cluster of white buildings.
- I-15 and SR76 is just to the lower right of center. Beck Reservoir is in the upper middle. Gird Road goes north-south to the left of center, with the Sycamore Ranch lots clearly seen.
- Rainbow. I-15 goes from lower left to the top middle, with Old Highway 395 immediately east. Rainbow Valley Blvd. takes off east from the lower left and turns north just left of center, joining I-15 just above left of center. No data are available for the extreme upper left. The Riverside - San Diego County line is just slightly south of the clear east-west line on the right, 1/3 of the way from the top of the picture, according to the Thomas Guide. I don't know why the line is not exactly at the border.
- Santa Margarita Mountains in the Cleveland National Forest just west of De Luz. Forest Road 8S01 is the prominent zig-zag road that enters the picture in the lower left, goes north a short distance, then doubles back on itself and goes southeast to the bottom of the picture, and then goes up the center of the picture. It meets the Tenaja Road at the top center. Also at lower left is a former road to Lookout Peak, which is the short dead-end road that splits from 8S01 just below where 8S01 doubles back on itself. The road is now a hiking trail. Santa Margarita Peak is just off the bottom of the picture south of Lookout Peak. There is a locked gate on 8S01 going into Camp Pendleton just to the west of Lookout Peak.
Devil Canyon occupies most of the western part of this photo.
The Tenaja Truck Trail to De Luz, generally impassable to even 4 WD vehicles now due to washouts, zigzags from the Tenaja Road / 8S01 intersection to just below center on the right edge. At the lower right of the map, the vast maze of roads in the cleared area at lower right is on the east slope of Rocky Peak. The boulders of Rocky Peak show up clearly to the west of the cleared area.
The Tenaja Truck Trail to De Luz is shown in its entirety in this picture which is shifted east by half a picture's width. The bottom of the road at De Luz near the Garnsay Ranch is at dead center, about 1/8 of the way up from the bottom of the picture. The top of the road is nearly exactly at the upper left edge, just past the smooth meadow.
- Santa Margarita River. The Santa Margarita River Trail goes along the river, from the left edge of the photo, 1/4 of the way up from the bottom, to the middle of the photo, also 1/4 up from the bottom. Sandia Creek goes along the left edge from north to south, and the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve is at the upper right.
Small-Scale Images (0.6 miles wide by 0.4 miles high)
These images give the maximum resolution available on the web.
- Fallbrook High School, prior to the recent construction. The Bus Barn is at the bottom center. Winterhaven runs east-west along the bottom, Mission prior to the road-widening runs northwest-southeast along the left, and Stagecoach runs east-west just above center before curving to the northeast. The progression of the athletic fields from the Girl's Soccer field at bottom center, through the Baseball Field at center right, to the Football Field on the right is especially clear. The 10's, 20's, 30's, etc. buildings are just left of center.
- Fallbrook Street School is on the extreme left of the image, just west of the vacant lot. S. Mission goes north-south 1/3 of the way from the left. Main St. goes north-south in the middle. Major Market is at the bottom in the middle of the picture.
- Lucky Shopping Center, including Do-It Center and the intersections of Ammunition Road, S. Mission and S. Main Street. Lucky Shopping Center is on the far left at dead center, the Do-It Center is the very white building in the center, Mission is the curvy road going north-south, Main is the straight road going north-south, and Ammunition is the east-west road below Lucky Shopping Center.
- My House, which is just to left of dead center. Acacia Lane runs east-west just south of my house, and the junction with Alta Vista is just to the right, off the picture. This image is 0.3 miles wide by 0.2 miles high.
- North end of downtown Fallbrook shows S. Mission curving into E. Mission at the upper left. Main St. goes north-south in the middle. The playing field of the Boys and Girls Club is at the extreme right in the middle.

Winterwarm and San Luis Rey Heights Area
Digital Street Coordinates With Elevations, for you to use to make your own 2 and 3-dimensional maps of Fallbrook. As soon as I find a good 3-dimensional plotting program, I'll make some 3D maps.
I eventually plan to expand my digitization to the entire Fallbrook area. For now, I have just the Winterwarm and San Luis Rey Heights Area digitized.
