Supai Fact Sheet
- Supai and Havasu Canyon, etc., are in the Havasupai Indian Reservation, not Grand Canyon National Park. Entrance is by permission of the Havasupai, and most areas other than the Hualapai Hilltop Trail to Supai and the trail to the Colorado River are forbidden to visitors.
- To reach the trailhead at Hualapai Hilltop requires driving on a ~60 mile paved road from U.S. 66, 7 miles east of Peach Springs and 34 miles west of Seligman. There are no services along this road.
In April 1989, from Kingman, AZ, Hualapai Hilltop was 117 miles and 1 hour 53 minutes driving time. From Peach Springs, Hualapai Hilltop was 70 miles and 1 hour 6 minutes.
- There are a series of unpaved roads that begin 7 miles south of the entrance to the Grand Canyon at AZ 180 and end up 7 miles south of Hualapai Hilltop, but I strongly recommend against it unless you enjoy driving terrible dirt roads or exploring a new area. I enjoyed doing these roads once, but won't do them again. There are two problems with the unpaved roads:
- 17 miles along the first dirt road, some private landowners have gotten permission to close the road, so instead of travelling less than 1 mile on the former public road, you now have to take a 21 mile detour! This is an unbelievably bad thing to do, and someone should be severely punished for allowing this to happen.
- The remaining 20 miles of dirt road is the proverbial "20 miles of bad road", and the chances of a flat appear to be unity. (We got ours.) The 4-wheel-drive Jeep Cherokee that I was in was only able to go about 5 mph on this bad road.
- The nearest motel is the Frontier Motel near Peach Springs, 520 769 2238. I stayed there in 1986 and it was ok. I brought my own food. There are other motels in Peach Springs, Seligman, and, farther away, Kingman or Williams. In 1989 I stayed in Kingman which worked out perfectly fine.
- The lodge at Supai has apparently been rebuilt after a flood knocked it out some years ago. There are no kitchen facilities at the lodge. Extra people are ok in the rooms on the floor. Bring a pad for the floor, they'll supply an extra blanket.
- The cafe at Supai has short-order food, and wonderful milkshakes.
- There are no fish in Havasu Creek.
- If you drink, you must bring your own alcohol.
- As of 1989, it required 2 months reservation for a one-way animal (horse, mule) down, but only 24 hours notice for going up.
- For the best current information, go to Bob Ribakas' Grand Canyon National Park site and his Supai and the Havasupai Reservation page, and to Matthew Haughey's My Havasupai Hike, which contains 1997 or 1998 brochures from Supai.
