Do your eyelids droop, appear baggy, "show your age,"
interfere with vision above, or make you appear "tired?" If so,
you might consider having a blepharoplasty, the surgical removal of
excess eyelid skin and underlying tissue.
Key Benefits
Your eyes are one of the
first features people notice. Unfortunately, they are also one of the
first to show signs of aging. Over time your eyelids may thin and lose
elasticity, causing them to sag. Or protruding fat from your eye sockets
may cause bags - often the result of aging, but sometimes an inherited
trait that shows up early in life. These changes can make you look tired
or sad, when you're feeling something else altogether. Blepharoplasty or
eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure, which can improve your appearance.
Your eyes are an expressive feature, not only because of your eyes
themselves, but also because of the
eyelids surrounding them. Blepharoplasty can have dramatic effect on your
eyelids, restoring a brighter, more rested appearance to your face. After
Blepharoplasty, your eyes can express the energy and self-confidence you
are truly feeling.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty
or eyelid surgery is a type of plastic surgery that can be performed on
your upper or lower eyelids to remove excess skin and fat from around your
eyes. Sagging eyebrows or eyelids may be corrected at the same time.
Why
is Blepharoplasty done?
Blepharoplasty
is done to improve the visual function and/or cosmetic appearance.
Excessive upper eyelid tissue can block the upper part of the visual
field. This can be determined by lifting the upper lids with your fingers
to see if the upper visual field improves or the vision brightens. A
formal visual field test that can be administered in our office is
necessary when applying for insurance coverage. The weight of this excess
tissue may cause brow ache and fatigue.
An excessive number of wrinkled skin folds above the eyes can produce a
sagging tired look, which detracts from one's general appearance. In this
situation, Blepharoplasty may be considered for cosmetic reasons even
though vision is not affected. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is one of the
most common plastic surgery operations performed.
Why
is it important to consult an Ophthalmologist when considering
Blepharoplasty?
Because Blepharoplasty can
affect the function and lubrication of the eye, a consultation with an
ophthalmologist is important. Although other surgeons may perform
Blepharoplasty, and ophthalmologist is the only surgeon trained
specifically to treat the eye. Therefore, your ophthalmologist is uniquely
qualified to help you decide whether you should consider this surgery.
